ARTfactory’s Pied Piper Theatre Launches New “Conservatory” Program with Production of 12 Angry Jurors

[Manassas, VA] – ARTfactory’s Pied Piper Theatre is excited to announce the launch of its new “Conservatory” program, providing a unique opportunity for aspiring actors to delve into an intimate, ensemble-driven rehearsal process. The program’s inaugural production, 12 Angry Jurors, promises to showcase the actor-driven storytelling that sets this initiative apart from the company’s traditional productions.

12 Angry Jurors, adapted by Sherman L. Sergal and based on the Emmy Award-winning television movie by Reginald Rose, is a tension-driven drama that unfolds entirely within a confined jury room, where twelve jurors deliberate the fate of a young man accused of murder. As tensions rise and prejudices surface, the play explores themes of justice, prejudice, and the power of individual conviction amidst a backdrop of societal pressure and the presumption of innocence.

The play offers a departure from Pied Piper Theatre’s usual fare of vibrant musicals. Instead, the conservatory-based production will focus on deep character exploration, textual analysis, and the fine art of realistic, high-stakes drama. This workshop-style approach, taught by industry professionals, enables performers to strip away spectacle and immerse themselves in the power of pure performance. “We’re focusing on the most fundamental elements of theatre: character, connection, and performance,” explains ARTfactory’s Producing Artistic Director, Kimberly Kemp.

Pied Piper Theatre’s Conservatory program is designed to support emerging talents by nurturing their growth through an in-depth, creative, and challenging rehearsal process. The production of 12 Angry Jurors will give these actors the opportunity to sharpen their skills in creating subtle performances that capture the intricate layers of dramatic tension and emotional depth. Acceptance into the program is by audition only and unlike Pied Piper’s mainstage productions, there is no participation fee.

Performances of 12 Angry Jurors will be held in the Wind River Theater at the ARTfactory on May 1 at 7:00 PM and May 3 and 4 at 2:00 PM. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit the ARTfactory website at www.virginiaartfactory.org/tickets.

168幸运飞行艇开奖官网 Actors Theatre at the ARTfactory to present Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” – A Timeless Drama of Guilt, Responsibility, and the American Dream https://virginiaartfactory.org/actors-theatre-at-the-artfactory-to-present-arthur-millers-all-my-sons-a-timeless-drama-of-guilt-responsibility-and-the-american-dream/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 16:12:45 +0000 https://virginiaartfactory.org/?p=4284 All My Sons, by legendary playwright Arthur Miller, returns to the stage in an Actors Theatre at the ARTfactory production. The play, originally premiered in 1947, continues to resonate with audiences as it examines the cost of personal decisions and the dark side of the American dream.

Written by one of America’s most acclaimed playwrights, All My Sons is set in the aftermath of World War II, and focuses on Joe Keller, a businessman whose actions during the war have tragic consequences. While taking a critical look at the pursuit of success at any cost, the story follows Joe as he tries to justify his decisions. As the past unravels, the play’s characters must confront uncomfortable truths about their own morals, sacrifices, and the lies they’ve lived. The play’s theme, which examines the complexities of human choices, the price of ambition, and following the American Dream, is just as relevant today as it was in the post-war era.

Directed by Ahryel Tinker, the production will bring fresh perspective to Miller’s classic tale, with a talented cast and innovative staging, the intent is to highlight the emotional and psychological complexity of each character. All My Sons serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of personal and societal decisions.

The cast includes Scott Murphy-Neilson, Kimberly Kemp, Andrew Chi, Raeanna Nicole Larson, Chris Beatley, Eleanore Tapscott, Joshua Mutterperl, Devyn Tinker,Anastasia Hanchak, and Noah Delune.

Performances will be held in the Wind River Theater at the ARTfactory on April 3, 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13. Showtimes are 7:30 every day but Sunday at 2 PM. The April 3rd performance is a pay what you can performance and ticket reservations are on a first-come, first serve basis. 168幸运飞行艇开奖官网 Actors Theatre at the ARTfactory to Present Critically Acclaimed One-Man Play, Every Brilliant Thing https://virginiaartfactory.org/actors-theatre-at-the-artfactory-to-present-critically-acclaimed-one-man-play-every-brilliant-thing/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 15:19:51 +0000 https://virginiaartfactory.org/?p=3716 At the end of February, ARTfactory will present the critically acclaimed one-man play, Every Brilliant Thing. This deeply moving yet incredibly funny play takes an intimate look at the highs and lows of joy and despair, as seen through the eyes of a single storyteller.

In response to their mother’s attempted suicide, and in the hopes of understanding her better, a child begins a list of Every Brilliant Thing worth living for: Ice cream, water fights, staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV. As the child journeys into adulthood, they continue telling the story of the list and in the process, remind us of the power of human connection, the beauty in the everyday, and the importance of holding on to hope, even in our darkest moments.

Written by Duncan Macmillan with Jonny Donohoe, the play uses sadness and humor, sweetness and honesty, silliness and poignancy to bring insight into the subject of loving someone with mental illness. Although aspects of mental health are approached from a positive perspective, and the play is about resilience and hope, Every Brilliant Thing does address the topics of depression and suicide.

Directed by ARTfactory Producing Artistic Director, Kimberly Kemp, the play stars David Johnson as the story-teller. Johnson, a long-time ARTfactory director and actor, had been hoping to perform Every Brilliant Thing for several years. “I remember (in 2017) telling the theatre arts director of the ArtFactory about this breathtakingly beautiful play and how badly I wanted to do it in the theatre on the third floor of the ARTfactory.” In 2022, when Kemp mentioned she wanted to direct the show, the collaboration was inevitable.

The production is personal for both Johnson and Kemp who have experienced this type of loss. Johnson speaks candidly about the loss of an ARTfactory’s Pied Piper Theatre youth, “He reminded me of the character in the [Every Brilliant Thing] because he was so fearless in his creativity and expression.” He goes on to mention individuals like Robin Williams, who spent a lifetime entertaining the world, while hiding a darkness that covers them constantly. Johnson’s hope is that this production openly explores that premise and encourages healthy conversations regarding seeking support for those in need.

Every Brilliant Thing was first produced in June 2013, by Paines, Plough and Pentabus Theatre at the Ludlow Fringe Festival, performed by Jonny Donahoe. Its North American premiere, also performed by Donahoe, was at the Barrow Street Theatre, NYC, in December 2014. Every Brilliant Thing was a Lucille Lortel Award Nominee for Outstanding Solo Show.

The play will be performed in an intimate in-the-round setting, and involves audience participation. All participation is optional. The production may be enjoyed with or without directly participating. It should also be noted that although the play uses humor when telling this reverent story, Every Brilliant Thing does discuss the topic of suicide and this may be triggering for some audience members.

Performances of Every Brilliant Thing will be held on February 28 and March 1 at 7:30 PM and March 2 at 2:00 in the Wind River Theater at the ARTfactory. Tickets can be purchased on the ARTfactory website at www.virginiaartfactory.org.

“Beyond the Surface”
“Beyond the Surface” presents recent works by contemporary figurative painter, William Kennedy that aim to explore and express the emotional depth and complexity of black male figures. Kennedy challenges the often-one-dimensional perceptions of black men by portraying their vulnerabilities alongside their strengths in his artwork. His paintings reflect his own experiences as a 37-year-old black man, and they seek to provoke thought, inviting viewers to engage with the unseen emotions that lie beneath the surface. Each piece delves into the featured figures inner world, capturing both the softness and resilience that define their existence. Kennedy works primarily with acrylic paint, applying it to both canvas and wood panels, where he finds the texture and depth of these materials allow for greater emotional resonance in his work.

Ultimately, Kennedy’s art is an introspective journey, not only for himself, but for those who view it. Kennedy wants his audience to see that black men are more than the stereotypes and societal expectations placed upon them. They are multifaceted individuals with rich inner lives, and through his art, he seeks to tell their stories.

About the Artist
Born in 1987 in SE Washington, DC, William’s creativity started at a young age by simply drawing any and everything around him. At the age of 10, he moved to New Bedford, MA, where his focus shifted to sports, while still drawing in his spare time. Although William took art classes throughout his school years, art was never really thought of as more than a hobby. It was only later in life that Kennedy realized his natural talents would lead him to be the self-made artist he is today. As a self-taught artist, he became a freelance designer and illustrator, working as such for the past 10 years. A little over a year ago, he shifted to Contemporary Painting and Portraiture, which has become his primary focus. Using acrylic on canvas and charcoal on paper/canvas, a lot of his work focuses on urban culture, with each piece having its own meaning. His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in galleries and museums, including the Brick Lane Gallery in London, the Liberal Arts Gallery in Michigan, and the New Bedford Art Museum and Narrows Center for the Arts in Massachusetts.

168幸运飞行艇开奖官网 ARTfactory’s Long-Time Community Theatre Gains New Name and Professional Status https://virginiaartfactory.org/artfactorys-long-time-community-theatre-gains-new-name-and-professional-status/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 17:42:47 +0000 https://dev.virginiaartfactory.org/?p=1756 Originally published on October 5, 2024

On January 1, 2025, ARTfactory’s long-time community theatre company, Rooftop Productions began functioning under a new name and status. The new company, named ARTfactory Actors Theatre, will be a professional company where all cast and production staff are paid.

The ARTfactory has been a cornerstone of the arts community in this region for over forty years. As the organization has transformed over time, so has its theatre division. ARTfactory CEO, Talya Conroy feels the non-profit is ready to commit to a professional status, “We have worked hard to be able to pay production teams for their time and talents, and now the ARTfactory is in a position to extend that professional credit to local actors.” Always one to ask “what’s next”, or “where do we go now,” Conroy is excited to be able to offer this to local talent while continuing ARTfactory’s commitment to the region’s community vitality. She goes on to explain that this adjustment and growth will not take away from the community-based culture or ARTfactory’s non-profit status.

This change will also grant an opportunity to hundreds of Pied Piper Theatre students. Once students have aged out of the youth program, they will have a local theatre company to gain professional credits as they start their next steps in the performing arts. ARTfactory is committed to finding ways for people to work, play, and stay in our community.

Along with the theatre company name change comes a title change for current Director of Theatre Arts, Kimberly Kemp. Her new title will be Producing Artistic Director, a title more fitting to the parameters of the position, which includes the artistic vision and focus of the theatre company as well as managing the production process. “Kimberly has already been doing the work and leading the charge as the creative leader of the theatre division at the ARTfactory. Her deliberate choices for a season, along with her commitment to ensuring everyone sees themselves on our stage is a great asset to our organization,” states Conroy.

Productions will still be held at ARTfactory’s Wind River Theatre, as well as Hylton Performing Arts Center, depending on the production. The 2025 inaugural season brings a mix of comedy and drama with play titles, All My Sons, Every Brilliant Thing, and Lend Me A Soprano and musical titles, Cabaret, Little Shop of Horrors, and the family holiday favorite, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.

Currently, ARTfactory Actors Theatre will be the only professional theatre company for plays and musicals in Prince William County, Manassas City, and Manassas Park. Although the new theatre company will function under a professional status, ARTfactory encourages all individuals to audition for its upcoming shows, regardless of experience. For more information on ARTfactory’s theatre companies, including Actors Theatre and their youth company, Pied Piper Theatre, visit their website at www.virginiaartfactory.org.
